Barry Purdy

Director and Patent Attorney

I graduated in Natural Sciences at Trinity College Dublin in 1991 and then completed a post-graduate diploma in Food Science and Technology at UCC. I am a co-founder of PurdyLucey and have worked in the patent profession for more than 25 years. During this time, I have worked in the Patent Department of a global food company and worked in private practice in Ireland and the UK. My portfolio of clients includes global food multinationals, Irish and European SME’s, technology start-ups, and Universities in Ireland and the US.

These days I spend a lot of time advising Material Science,  Biotech and MedTech start-ups, including a number of high-profile Irish companies at various stages of development. This work generally involves shaping and developing an IP strategy tailored for the company, including reviewing patent landscapes, monitoring competitor patent portfolio’s, prosecuting patent applications, and providing guidance on patent freedom to operate issues. I also advise a number of Irish and US technology investment funds, and global food companies, on IP due diligence issues.

I also enjoy working with University clients, advising on patentability and patent filing strategies, and guiding University case managers through the patent process. PurdyLucey are very proud to represent most of the Universities in Ireland, and many high-profile University principal investigators. Over the last 15 years we have been involved in many of the most important inventions to arise in Irish Universities.

When not advising clients on IP, I like to spend time with family, dog, and friends. I play guitar and piano and was once a member of rock band who “toured the world and beyond”. My rock and roll days have been curtailed, but I still enjoy the very occasional dip back into that world.
