Michael Lucey

Director and Patent Attorney

With over 20 years’ experience working as a Patent Attorney, I am also a co-founder of Purdy Lucey.

Following my graduation from University College Cork with an honours degree in Electrical Engineering, Michael worked with The Tyndall Institute, the leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems, where I specialised in both electronics and photonics (materials, devices, circuits and systems) gaining experience in the development of software applications for measuring instruments, and the design of components for ASIC circuits.

I specialise in the drafting and prosecution of patents in the fields of electronics, software, power converters, telecommunications, optoelectronics, imaging systems and medical devices. I act for large, well known, High Tech US multinational corporations and world leading University Institutions before the European Patent Office (EPO), manages substantial patent portfolios and I am responsible for prosecuting several important European patents in the field of telecommunications.

In recent years I have advised many University start-up and new technology based High Potential Start-Up (HPSU) companies, devising complex Intellectual Property filing strategies. I have also acted for successful ICT Irish based SMEs.

I have extensive experience in prosecuting patent applications at the EPO including Oral proceedings, as well as preparing and filing Notices of Opposition at the EPO.

I lecture on Intellectual Property for local Irish Universities and am a member of EPI, Irish Patents Law Committee, and the IEEE. I am also a UK Chartered Patent Attorney, an Irish Registered Patent Agent, an Irish Registered and Community Trade Mark and Design Attorney; a Fellow of the UK Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and hold an Intellectual Property Litigation Certificate awarded by IPReg.
