Patent Attorney

Further to obtaining my honours degree in Analytical Science from Dublin City University I then qualified as a European Patent Attorney, a Chartered Patent Attorney in the United Kingdom and a Registered Patent Agent and Trade Mark Agent in Ireland.

I entered the patent profession in 1988 and worked at an established firm of Irish and UK patent attorneys based in Dublin, where my client focus was in the mechanical, chemical and biological fields.  Having qualified as a European and Irish patent attorney, I then joined Unilever plc’s Patent Department and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in the United Kingdom.   During my time in Unilever,  I was responsible for advising on infringement risks and for the international protection, prosecution and enforcement of intellectual property rights for Unilever’s deodorants, perfumes, cosmetics, packaging and toothbrush businesses – including brands such as Calvin Klein, Elida Fabergé, Dove, Mentadent, Persil and Elizabeth Arden.  I subsequently returned to private practice in Ireland and the UK, ultimately establishing the Irish branch a UK firm of patent attorneys.   I have considerable experience of advising Irish, British and international clients, small and large, on all aspects of intellectual property protection, prosecution and enforcement.

In terms of my legal expertise, I have in depth knowledge of original patent drafting, filing and prosecution across a broad range of technical fields including those mentioned below, together with in depth experience of innovation management, IP portfolio management, infringement risk assessments, competitor analyses and surveillance, IP strategies, IP due diligence exercises, patentability advice, design rights advice, trademarks advice, patent oppositions and appeals at EPO and patent ownership disputes and litigation

On a side note, one of my thankless pastimes include being a Shih Tzu lover and a keen but frequently unsuccessful gardener!
