I am a Patent Attorney with extensive experience in a wide variety of practice areas with my focus in Life science and Biotechnology including microbiology, immunology (including antibodies), stem cells, biofuels, vaccines, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, drug delivery systems, food science, plant variety rights, as well as medical devices including stents and pacemakers and mechanical devices.
I have vast experience in advising, drafting and prosecuting patent applications for these sectors in multiple jurisdictions including Ireland, the UK, Europe, the US, China, Japan and Australia. My work involves providing strategic advice, management of worldwide patent portfolios, the preparation of opinions and freedom to operate analyses. I also have experience representing clients before the Examining and Opposition Divisions at the European Patent office.
My knowledge also extends to the field of Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) having filed SPC applications at both the Irish Patents Office (IPO) and the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO). In addition to patents, I have experience in the registration of designs, particularly European Community Registered Designs.
Throughout my career, I have worked with a variety of clients including private inventors, SMEs, biotech start-ups, Universities and large multinationals.
I completed my PhD at Trinity College Dublin where I investigated molecular markers in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma. I worked briefly as a postdoctoral researcher in the field of nutritional genomics before entering the patent profession in 2007.
I started my career with an Irish based firm of patent attorneys, before moving to the UK where I worked at a leading London based IP law firm from where I joined Purdy Lucey in 2016.
I am a European Patent Attorney, a Chartered UK Patent Attorney, a Registered Irish Patent Agent and a Community Trade Mark Attorney.
I am also a member of the Law Committee of the Association of Patent and Trade Mark Agents of Ireland and has tutored on Irish, UK and European Patent Law.
I am also a previous member of the European Qualifying Examination Committee for Chemistry.
